0) What
is ordinary Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove small packets of
excess fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. A small tube called
a cannula, connected to a vacuum machine, is inserted into the fatty tissue
through tiny incisions placed in inconspicuous locations on the skin.
Dr. Jeffrey Rapaport gently moves the cannula around under your skin removing
the unwanted fatty deposits. The result is resculpting of bulging areas
into more attractive contours. Back

What is Narrower Waist Liposuction? ![]()
Simply removing isolated areas of fat from the stomach, hips, or waist
will not achieve narrower waist. In fact, because the body might distribute
weight, or the patient may gain weight after the procedure, this would
create an appearance that the body is out of balance.
The most artistic lipo sculpture of the body shapes the body, rather than merely removing the fat. Dr. Rapaport considers the entire three dimensional unit, so that the body will be in proper proportion, and clothing will fit better.
The abdomen, flanks, and under the the bra area all make up the borders of the waist. These areas should be treated during any single procedure if one is attempting to achieve "Narrower Waist" Liposuction. If other areas need to be treated, a separate procedure should be planned. The two procedures should be designed to complement each other.

What is UAL?
Ultrasonically Assisted Lipoplasty is done in conjunction with Tumescent
Liposuction. With the Tumescent technique, large volumes of saline solution,
local anesthesia, & adrenaline are infused into the area being treated
to cause swelling. This enables Dr. Rapaport to go more superficially
under the skin. UAL uses a probe with ultrasound at the tip to liquefy
subcutaneous fat cells and easier sculpting. The Ultrasonic energy acts
primarily on the fat cells and has minimal effect on the vascular, nervous
or connective tissues. With UAL Dr. Rapaport believes he can achieve smoother
results, remove difficult fibrous fatty deposits and aspirate more fat.

3)
What areas can be treated?
The most frequent areas treated by Dr. Rapaport using UAL in men are the
love handles, chest area, abdomen and neckline. In women they include:
thighs, hips, buttocks, stomach, knees, lower leg, cheeks and double chins.
Some women elect to have their fat recycled to other parts of their body,
most commonly face using lipo-augmentation. Back

4)
Who are the best candidates for UAL?
There are no definite weight or age guidelines or restrictions. Most patients
have localized fatty deposits, are within 30lbs of their ideal weight,
and have been stable at that weight for years. Dr. Rapaport feels that
best candidates for body sculpting are patients who:
a) Have reasonable expectations of results.
b) Are only slightly to modestly overweight.
c) Have good skin tone and are in good health.
d) Have localized areas of fat.
e) Believe that liposuction is not a weight loss program.
f) .Whose weight is stable and are exercising.Back

5) What
will my recovery be like?
You will wear an elastic binder, girdle or body stocking over the treated
area for the next 2 -4 weeks. You will go home after the procedure and
rest for at least 24 hours, after which you may gradually increase your
activity as tolerated. Dr. Rapaport encourages people to walk. Most
people return to work in about a week. Back

6)
Will I need a second procedure?
Most likely one procedure will be sufficient. Dr. Rapaport's revision
rate is less than 8%. Back

7)
How will my skin look like after surgery?
Dimples, ripples and stretch marks remain unchanged. The changes following
liposuction are similar to what you would expect if you could lose an
equal amount of localized fat through diet or exercise alone. The use
of smaller cannulas allows the fibrous connections between your skin and
body to remain. These connections will help the skin retract over time.
For the lower abdomen the skin contracts extremely well, thereby seldomly
needing any skin excisions.Back

8)
Is fat removal permanent?
Yes! After puberty we do not create new fat cells. Therefore, when you
gain weight, you expand the existing fat cells that you have. Tumescent
liposuction permanently removes fat cells to improve your body's shape.
Should you gain weight after liposuction, it goes to the fat cells that
remain in your body. The localized fatty deposits that existed prior to
liposuction can no longer enlarge. Back

9)
Will UAL get rid of cellulite?
UAL is not a treatment for cellulite, although many patients do notice
an improvement in the appearance of cellulite after the fat calls are
removed. Back

What is Tumescent Liposuction? Please explain in detail
?
The Tumescent Technique for liposuction by local anesthesia is a significant
improvement in liposuction surgery. It is so effective that liposuction
patients may no longer need intravenous sedatives, narcotic analgesics,
or general anesthesia. Postoperative discomfort is minimized since the
local anesthesia remains in the surgically treated areas for approximately
18 hours after surgery.
The Tumescent Technique uses
large volumes of a dilute solution of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, in
combination with the drug epinephrine, which temporarily shrinks capillaries.
The Tumescent Technique dramatically reduces both the bleeding during
surgery and the postoperative bruising and swelling compared to liposuction
by general anesthesia. Minimal bleeding reduces postoperative recovery
time. Most patients can return to work within a week after surgery. (Every
patient is different and Dr. Rapaport can give you an estimate). An elastic
support garment is worn for 2-4 weeks.
About 90% of patients can actually see at least some improvement in their silhouette by one week after surgery. However, because of the slow resolution of post-surgical swelling, the ultimate results following liposuction usually require 12 to 16 weeks to be achieved.
The change of silhouette produced by liposuction is equivalent to being able to focus the effects of dieting to specific areas of the body. The degree of skin change after liposuction is the same as one would expect after having lost an equal amount of localized fat by dieting. Since the fat is removed by suctioning small "tunnels" through the fat, the skin remains intimately connected to the underlying muscles by multiple attachments. It is this process which assures that the skin will not hang in loose folds after liposuction. Because Dr. Rapaport is careful to leave a thin blanket of fat attached to the skin, the Tumescent Technique permits more accurate removal of fat, with greater assurance that the liposuction cannula will not inadvertently be allowed to approach too near the under surface of the skin which would cause irregularities. Thus, the Tumescent Technique helps to minimize the risk of post-surgical irregularities or rippling of the skin.
Although the results of liposuction are often quite spectacular, it is
not realistic to expect perfection. Liposuction of the thighs, while improving
the silhouette, does not necessarily eliminate the subtle "puckering"
of the skin, which is often called "cellulite". Cellulite results
from the pull of fibrous tissue that connects skin to underlying muscle.
Liposuction with the Tumescent Technique may reduce the degree of cellulite
but it is unlikely to eliminate it. As with any surgical procedure, liposuction
is associated with certain expected side effects such as bruising, swelling,
and temporary numbness. Although irregularities of the skin are possible
following liposuction, this side effect is minimized by the Tumescent
Technique. As judged by current worldwide experience, liposuction is amazingly
safe. Serious complications, such as blood clots, infections, and allergic
reactions are extremely rare. Most of the dangers associated with surgery
are related to the type of anesthesia that is used. Surgery of the skin
and subcutaneous fat is safest using local anesthesia with the patient
awake.Back to
